LITTLE ODESSA / Ongoing
Little Odessa is located eight thousand kilometers from Moscow, and ten thousand from the real Odessa on the Black Sea. It is a New York City neighborhood located in the borough of Brooklyn, bordering the famous and mythologized Coney Island. It was originally planned as a resort for wealthy Americans, but several factors and contingencies have contributed to its gradual decline. After the World War II, the quality of life in Brighton Beach decreased significantly as the poverty rate and the ratio of older residents to younger residents increased. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent significant changes in the social and economic circumstances of post-Soviet states led thousands of former Soviet citizens to immigrate to the United States. Many of the Soviet immigrants of the late 1980s and the 1990s, who primarily spoke Russian, chose Brighton Beach as a place to settle. Currently, most of the population of Brighton Beach are immigrants. The perception we have of this territory, is its identity, layered and indefinite.
